The 3 Secrets to Effective Time Investment: How to Achieve More Success with Less Stress
When I started at my first job out of college, I was part of GE’s management training program. I carried around a black planner book—I had every half hour planned. I could tell you what I was going to be doing three or four weeks out –to the half hour. I planned eating, I planned exercise, I planned meetings, I planned everything. Then someone made fun of me—they meant it as joke, but it hit on something—maybe I was over-planning my life and not leaving room for spontaneity.
Then I met and got engaged to John, who was terminally ill. I swung completely to other side of the spectrum in terms of planning. I did my best to put things on my calendar, but I always knew things would likely change at a moments notice. At some point, I simply gave up planning beyond, get up, go to work, and spend time with John if he was feeling up to it.
Then as email made it’s way into my life—I started living out of my inbox. I knew that wasn’t workable, so I tried a number of calendars and to do lists, and even project management systems, but never found anything that worked as well as a handwritten list posted in big print on my whiteboard.
I still find myself struggling with the mechanics of time management – but am beginning to find a balance. One of the things that has helped me invest my time wisely is a book by Elizabeth Grace Saunders who wrote The 3 Secrets to Time Investment: How to Achieve More Success with Less Stress.
